What Should Be Checked Before a Critical Power System Is Handed Over?
Completing the installation of a UPS is not the same as completing the project. Before the system enters normal operation, it must be confirmed that it has been installed correctly, that its operating parameters correspond to the design and that its basic protection functions have been tested. This is the essence of commissioning: putting the system into operation and verifying its behaviour against the project requirements.
Installation and electrical parameters
Equipment location and ventilation, environmental conditions, cabling, connections, upstream protection and battery installation must comply with the technical specifications. This is followed by verification of input, output and DC voltages, battery settings, operating parameters and – where applicable -the configuration of parallel units.
The recorded final configuration forms the reference baseline against which verification remains valid. Any future change can therefore be assessed against a known and documented condition of the system.
Functional testing
Normal operation through the inverter, battery operation, transfer to static bypass and return to normal operation are key functional checks. Where a maintenance bypass or parallel architecture is present, the corresponding checks are required in accordance with the project design. Depending on criticality and requirements, load testing or autonomy testing may also be specified.

Alarms, communications and documentation
Alarms, communication cards, connection to a BMS or other supervisory systems, and remote monitoring must be checked before the installation can be considered operationally ready. Handover should provide a documented record of the equipment, settings, tests and any deviations or observations.
For the customer, this documentation has direct operational value: it reduces uncertainty about exactly what was delivered, speeds up diagnosis in a future incident, supports maintenance and allows subsequent interventions to be based on an actual documented baseline rather than assumptions.
