EN 50171-Certified Emergency Lighting Infrastructure at Motor Oil
ACE Power Electronics upgraded the power supply infrastructure supporting Motor Oil’s emergency lighting systems, delivering an EN 50171-certified solution for nine independent emergency lighting circuits across different buildings and operational areas of the refinery.
Safety with no margin for failure
In a modern refinery, the uninterrupted operation of emergency lighting systems is critical to protecting personnel, facilities and business operations. Escape lighting and emergency circuits must remain available at all times, even in the event of a complete loss of the main electrical supply.
To further strengthen the operational safety of its facilities, Motor Oil upgraded the infrastructure supporting its emergency lighting systems, entrusting ACE Power Electronics with the implementation of a solution certified to the European standard EN 50171.
Certified infrastructure for safety-critical applications
Full compliance with EN 50171, the standard specifying requirements for central power supply systems for safety applications, was a key requirement for Motor Oil. The solution was based on nine certified Riello Sentryum CSS UPS systems, supporting nine independent emergency lighting circuits across different buildings and operational areas of the facility.
The systems were equipped with VRLA AGM battery banks with a 10-year design life, providing 90 minutes of autonomy and ensuring the continuous operation of critical emergency lighting circuits in the event of a mains power failure.
From supply to final acceptance
ACE Power Electronics was responsible for equipment supply, technical support during installation, commissioning, functional testing and final system acceptance procedures. The project was carried out in an environment with stringent safety requirements, calling for specialist expertise, coordinated execution and strict adherence to the procedures governing refinery operations.
Final testing and commissioning were performed by ACE Power Electronics’ specialist technical personnel, ensuring that the power supply to each emergency lighting circuit fully met the project requirements before final handover.
Strengthening operational readiness
With the project completed, Motor Oil now has a fully certified uninterruptible power supply infrastructure for nine independent emergency lighting circuits, further strengthening operational safety and the readiness of its facilities to respond to emergencies.
The project also demonstrates ACE Power Electronics’ ability to deliver complex critical power applications in demanding industrial environments, combining technical expertise, regulatory compliance and more than 35 years of experience in supporting critical industrial and energy infrastructure.
“In safety applications, there is no room for compromise. When the system is needed, its reliability must be assured.”
