Emergency Lighting: It Must Work at the Critical Moment
Emergency lighting is part of the infrastructure that is activated when the normal power supply is unavailable. Its purpose is not to replace normal lighting, but to support safe evacuation, the identification of exits and signs and, depending on the application, the safe completion of critical activities.
The critical factor is the availability of backup power
The presence of emergency lighting fixtures alone is not sufficient. The alternative energy source must be designed for the required load and operating duration, properly protected and capable of being tested periodically. ELOT EN 50171 defines general requirements for central power supply systems using batteries as an alternative power source and intended, among other applications, for escape lighting in the event of loss of the normal supply.
Central power supply with CSS
Riello UPS offers the CSS Sentryum range, designed in compliance with EN 50171 for the central power supply of safety and emergency systems. The centralised architecture enables consolidated management of the backup source and facilitates periodic verification of operation and autonomy, provided, of course, that the overall system has been designed and installed in accordance with the project requirements.

Periodic testing is part of reliability
A safety system must be known to be operational before it is required in a real event. Periodic inspections, battery condition, autonomy verification and proper documentation of the installation are therefore essential elements of operational reliability.
The value lies not simply in installing another power system. It lies in knowing that the backup supply for the emergency lighting has been designed for the specific application, can be tested in a structured manner and remains operationally ready when required in a real emergency.
